Welcome to the information page for the next Systems Training Cohort for licensed therapists scheduled to begin September 2026, occurring monthly for 12 months. With this training, you will begin the journey toward being prepared to utilize your unique talents and expertise to benefit your clients with steps toward the long-term change they are seeking.

Introduction

This training is designed to introduce you to the knowledge, understanding and application of the clinically-sound Family Systems Theory originated in Washington, D.C. in 1959 by Dr. Murray Bowen and is now researched at centers and practiced by therapists worldwide. Over the course of 12 months, you will be trained in the basic understanding of the Eight Concepts developed by Dr. Bowen through in-house clinical research with entire families conducted by himself and his trained staff. You will also learn the advancements which have been made possible through the utilization of technology in the fields of brain imaging, emotional regulation, multi-generational tracking and other research methods.

During this course, the objectives for learning are:

  • Develop an understanding of the eight principles and associated goals in the practice of Bowen Family Systems Theory

  • Learn how the eight concepts are integrated into a systemic understanding of human functioning, acute and chronic anxiety and individuality and togetherness 

  • Demonstrate the ability to apply Bowen concepts to self in an effort to see concepts in family for application to utilization of theory in one’s field of counseling

  • Identify personal and professional goals to work on active development of Differentiation

  • Develop an awareness of the Systems concepts in organizations and society  

  • Learn tools to assist in a psychoeducational process of the Bowen Family Systems approach to incorporate different learning modalities for application to varying client styles and needs

Details

Meets monthly in-person on the fourth Monday from 3:00- 6:00 pm. Attendance required to receive 2.75 CE hours per session (pending NBCC approval).

Location- 360 N Caswell, Charlotte, NC 28204

Trainer- Nancy E. Arnold, MA, LCMHC, PLLC 

Annual cost- $1,920 payable upon course acceptance; payment plan available

Attendee requirements- Master’s degree or higher in counseling field; successful completion of application and interview

Meet the Trainer

Nancy E. Arnold, MA, LCMHC, PLLC, owns and operates a private practice in Charlotte, NC, focusing on utilizing the Family Systems approach with all clients including adult individuals, couples and families. She began her training in Austin, TX,  in 2014 and since moving to NC in 2016 has continued the training and coaching with the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family in Washington, D.C. Ms. Arnold has been providing training for therapists in Bowen Systems theory since 2018 through weekly training courses, case consultation and coaching. This specific monthly training was first started in January, 2026.
